This past Monday, a group of California’s elected officials spent their lunch hour digging into a smorgasbord of vegan eats.

Legislators and staffers alike gathered in Assemblymember Mark Stone’s Sacramento office to snack on delicious eats from Miyoko’s Kitchen, Hampton Creek, Beyond Meat and other major plant-based brands.

The event was spearheaded by Kristie Middleton, Food Policy Manager for the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

“Assemblymember Stone and his office took the Meatless Monday pledge and this event was an extension of that,” Middleton explained. “They’re excited to help the Capital Community explore the delicious meatless options we can all enjoy when taking a weekly holiday from meat.”

The full menu included cheeses from Miyoko’s Creamery, taco salad from Garden to Grill, Beyond Chicken curry salad wraps, spinach and mushroom empanadas from Capital Garage, Just Cookie Dough from Hampton Creek, and baked goods from Sugar Plum Bakery.

“The attendees loved the food, saying it was amazing and of Miyoko’s cheeses, ‘They’re the best thing ever.'” Middleton told Latest Vegan News.

Her work includes partnering with organizations like hospitals, colleges, universities, and KM-12 schools to help them add more meat-free menu options.

“This event was a great way to introduce influential decisionmakers to the wide variety of healthy, sustainable, animal-friendly plant-based fare. These decisonmakers’ support will help with the adoption and support of these programs in cities throughout California, many of which have already implemented Meatless Monday in some capacity.”
