Prominent Conservative Writes Pro-Vegan Piece

Charles-KrauthammerConservatives and other right wing politicos are not typically known for their vegan-friendly views–they tend to be pro-gun and therefore pro-hunting, and the right wing’s most popular talk show hosts routinely balk at even minor animal rights reforms.

But there are, thankfully, always exceptions to the rule, and in this case prominent conservative Charles Krauthammer–a regular contributor on Fox News–came out last Friday with a surprisingly strong indictment against animal exploitation, including the killing of animals for food.

In his Washington Post column, Krauthammer predicts that not only will the mass, industrial slaughter of animals for food eventually come to an end, but that future generations will look back at the practice with revulsion and horror.

He believes the public’s growing opposition to the use of animals in entertainment, as witnessed by the incredible exodus from Seaworld and Ringling Bros. Circus’s decision to retire their elephants, is just the beginning of a major societal shift in how we view and treat animals.

To be sure, Krauthammer is neither a vegetarian nor vegan and still fully supports other forms of animal use, such as medical experimentation, that he deems “necessary.” But his condemnation of the way society abuses animals is a powerful one, especially since it comes from an unexpected side of the political aisle. In the growing vegan movement, such unlikely support is always welcome.
