Starbucks to COK: We’re Testing New Vegan Products

starbucks-veganStarbucks has heard the pleas of vegan coffee drinkers everywhere. In response to a campaign by Compassion Over Killing (COK) and activist Jane Velez-Mitchell, the corporation has said that they’re testing some new vegan products.

Here’s what they told COK and Velez-Mitchell: “We are in the testing stages of several new products that would qualify as vegan … we have our vegan customers in the forefront of our minds and can’t wait to present some new food options to accommodate the vegan diet and our loyal customers that have requested these options.”

While the mega-chain offers many beverage options for vegans, there’s almost nothing available as far as edibles — yet. The petition to get them to add plant-based foods has earned 21,430 supporters thus far.

“Right now, a growing number of consumers looking for dairy-free coffee beverages can turn to Starbucks for soy milk or coconut milk – but that’s where Starbucks menu currently falls short,” writes COK staff in a blog post about the news. “By expanding its food menu to include hearty meat-, egg-, and dairy-free options such as vegan cookies or muffins or a protein-packed breakfast sandwich, Starbucks would give existing customers more choices, while also reaching out to a new customer-base. And that’s where you come in!”

While Starbucks has yet to announce any other details, confirmation that they’re on board is a major win.

I live for their soy chai tea latte. About the only food I can eat there are the packaged nuts. I’d definitely purchase anything vegan just

Nice! I look forward to buying snacks at Starbucks to go with my matcha lattes!

Here is what I suggest would be fast and easily mass-produced vegan options for Starbucks or any other café owner reading this:

    -Hummus, crackers, carrots, and celery
-Vegan quesadillas (with bell pepper or pimento chickpea puree for “cheese”)
-Cold pasta salad, perhaps using vegan mayo like Just Mayo, bonus… use gluten free pasta
    -Tabbouleh (parsley salad)
    -Kale salad
-Vegan banana bread, a.k.a. banana bread, just stop making it with eggs, which pose a disease risk anyway
-Chick’n salad using Beyond Meat’s freakishly accurate plant-based stuff or Gardein, could also offer it as a sandwich
-Tofu scramble in the place of pathogen carrying eggs
