Sweet Earth Releasing Vegan Breakfast Sandwich Complete with ‘Egg’ Patty

Breakfast-Sandwich-TrioFor vegan eaters who aren’t into green juice or acai bowls, breakfast can be the most challenging meal of the day. Where’s the convenience? The variety? The satisfaction?

Sweet Earth Natural Foods, however, has been re-thinking the morning meal. They recently released a plant-based probiotic breakfast burrito, and as of October 1st, they’re rolling out a new line of breakfast sandwiches at Whole Foods — one of which is vegan.

“We wanted to offer a fully vegan breakfast sandwich from the start of our design process because we know that plant-based, sustainable food can be more delicious and nutritious than traditional breakfast offerings today; consumers just need convenient,  affordable options,” Kelly Swette, Sweet Earth’s CEO and founder, tells Latest Vegan News.

The vegan sammie (officially dubbed the Farmstand Flaxbread™ Vegan Breakfast Sandwich) features the company’s Benevolent Bacon, a spicy chickpea patty (resembling an egg) and a sun-dried tomato spread. The whole wheat bread is made with oats, oat bran, and flaxseed, and has 14.5g of whole grains per serving. The entire sandwich has 14g of protein and 6g of fiber.

The “egg” patty is the company’s own unique creation.

“I knew that chickpea flour, aka, gram flour or Besan flour is used in India in nutritious breakfast patties or coatings,” says Swette.  “That would serve as our base, but why not make it a little spicy to kick-up one’s metabolism in the morning, like adding cayenne pepper to your lemon water? That was the genesis of the design and then we experimented with onion and other spices to get a flavor that was better than egg with a texture and color that was familiar – to encourage trial and ease acceptance for less experimental eaters.”

Hungry yet? You can snag the sandwiches at your local Whole Foods as of October 1st.

    ANIMAL RENNET CHEESE?
Hi! On the Farmstand Flaxbread with Harmless Ham(TM) non-vegan sandwich (bought at Whole Foods in the vegan meat freezer), Sweet Earth Foods lists “Swiss Cheese” as an ingredient without listing its ingredients (the bread, egg patty, and harmless ham do have full ingredients listed). Nowhere on the package does it say “vegetarian”… so do we have to assume the Swiss Cheese is made with animal rennet (like most cheese) and therefore not vegetarian? If all their products are vegetarian as they say, why aren’t they labeled as vegetarian and why are the ingredients in their cheese not listed, when they must know that cheese is maybe the most tricky food for vegetarians? Can you help clarify? Thanks!

Hi Mia! I checked with the company and they confirmed that it is vegetarian cheese, made with vegetable-based enzymes, not rennet. 🙂 Hope that helps!

Hello Hannah, I just called in to ask about the cheese having animal or vegetable or micro rennet and the lady in customer service said many of your ingredients are sourced elsewhere and may contain animal product. So I told her that I would stay clear of your vegetarian products. She seemed alittle flustered with me. I just want to know the truth about what I eat. So what is the truth- do you know what makes up the cheeses in your products? I have two different answers from your company. Sincerely, Carol

          Hi Carol,
Sweet Earth’s products aren’t mine — I’m actually the writer/journalist who runs Latest Vegan News. 🙂 I wrote this story based on information I received from Sweet Earth directly. Perhaps the customer service rep wasn’t completely informed about where the products are sourced from? Either way, the company told me directly that the vegan sandwich this story was focused on was free from animal products. Regarding the vegetarian products, I would say maybe call back or email someone higher up in the company for more information? Hope that helps.
