Vegan Ultramarathoner Scott Jurek Breaks Appalachian Trail Record

Scott Jurek is no stranger to victory. The vegan ultramarathoner has taken home top honors in a whole host of prestigious races, from the Hardrock Hundred to the Badwater Ultramarathon to the Spartathlon.

Now, he has a new accolade to add to his list of honors: breaking the speed record for the legendary Appalachian Trail. Starting in Georgia and finishing in Maine, the 41-year-old broke the previous record by three hours.

The trail’s full length is 2,189 miles, and Jurek finished it in 46 days and a little over eight hours.

According to Runner’s World, Jurek and his wife intend to have children soon, so he’s pretty close to retirement. He called this run “his masterpiece.”

No matter what, Jurek has earned his place in the history books as a vegan champion. Think people still ask him how he gets his protein?

(You can check out Jurek’s race adventure via his Instagram–he had a live tracker posting photos along the way.)
