First-Ever Vegan Charity Shop to Open in the UK

vegan-charity-shopAnyone who’s spent time in the UK has heard the term “charity shop”. Installed on almost every corner, these thrift stores raise money for worthy causes-and are often wildly popular shopping spots.

Now, thanks to the Dr Hadwen Trust (DHT, a non-animal medical research organization), the UK is about to get its first vegan version of the ubiquitous stores, reports Newmarket Journal.

The shop will open in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, and DHT staffers believe it’s the country’s first that’s 100% vegan.

“We plan on being open for business in the summer and believe that opening a charity shop will help raise awareness of our work, as well as helping us engage with current and new supporters,” said Dr Kay Miller.

Shoppers at the vegan charity shop will get to choose from clothes, trinkets, books, beauty products, and even cake mixes donated by The Vegan Cakery. All of the money earned will then be used for doing research to help the cause, while hopefully also creating a social impact on their way. Keeping with the digital age, some nonprofits tend to make use of various tools and software to monitor their social impact as well. With the help of certain impact measurement tools, they can store and analyze data to see where they stand in creating a change in society. Not sure if this vegan charity shop will use such tools or not, however presently, their physical presence can be seen creating enough profits to contribute to their cause.

“We are sure that our customers and supporters will be delighted to hear that 100% of profits from the shop, and our online shop, will be used to help fund our cutting-edge research projects. Supporting our shop will be making a material contribution towards advancing medical research and towards saving the lives of countless animals that would have been destined for a life in a laboratory,” Miller says.

(They’re also recruiting a store manager, should you live in the UK and be available.)
