French Dictionary Adds the Word ‘Vegan’
It’s clear that veganism has made it to mainstream conversations in America, but the concept is making its way into the popular lexicon in other locales, too.
In France this week, the Petit Larousse encyclopaedic dictionary and Le Petit Robert announced that their 2016 editions would include the word “vegan,” reports The Guardian.
(The word itself was actually coined back in 1944 by Donald Watson, founder of the Vegan Society.)
Vegan’s addition is particularly notable considering it’s in English. Other newbies for the year include “selfie”, “focaccia”, “biryani”, “captcha” and “goji”.
