New Campaign Pushes for Vegan Food Options at Starbucks

2014-04-01 12.06.39As any vegan visitor to Starbucks is well aware, there’s little available in the way of plant-based food; a plain bagel, a bag of nuts or a fruit cup is about it.

Now, animal advocacy org Compassion Over Killing is teaming up with author and activist Jane Velez-Mitchell in officially asking the coffee giant to add vegan options to its food menu.

The campaign just launched via Change.org, and already has nearly 1,000 signatures.

“Starbucks is a go-to place for people who prefer soy milk in their coffee, and it recently added coconut milk as a second dairy-free option,” Erica Meier, Executive Director  of Compassion Over Killing, tells Latest Vegan News. “When it comes to vegan food, however, its menu falls short—and it’s falling behind some of its competitors. We launched this petition with Jane Velez-Mitchell to give consumers an easy yet effective way to let Starbucks know they want to enjoy vegan muffins and cookies or a protein-packed veggie sandwich along with their dairy-free latte.”

“This simple change will allow so many more customers to add a breakfast item with their coffee, stay for lunch, enjoy a pastry, or grab some food to go,” the petition reads.

The company does have a consumer request site, My StarbucksIdeas.com, and many threads have been posted over the years asking for vegan food options at Starbucks. This campaign is a chance to put extra public pressure on the coffee chain, however.

The Change.org petition also cites that many other national chains provide vegan options, including Le Pain Quotidien, Au Bon Pain, and even Einstein Bros Bagels.

    Dear friends,
Who doesn’t stop in at least from time to time at Starbucks? It’s where friends meet. Starbucks has great coffees, and a few vegan drink options. But it’s impossible to get any vegan food there. Their salads and sandwiches always come with cheese or meats. And no, we don’t want to pick out the offending pieces. (If you were served a salad with pieces of dog in it, and the server said, ‘well just pick out the pieces,’ would that seem appetizing to you? I don’t thinkkkkkk so. Whether you’re vegan or not, please support those of us who are so we don’t have to drive extra miles to find food for our hungry stomachs. Even just one vegan sandwich would help us! Can’t Starbucks be as enlightened and inclusive as Subway?

It would be perfect if you offered vegan food choices. I often want a muffin or something with my coffee when I go to Starbucks but find that is nearly impossible.

Please offer a vegan sandwich. Your wrap looked so good but it had dairy in the dressing.
